Woods started off brightly and early pressure paid off when Laurie Walters converted a free kick from the edge of the box, giving the keeper no chance. The game stagnated a little but Woods were the more dangerous and chances were coming and going.

Bedfont were due to play their League Cup final against AFC Wimbledon on Thursday, and some of their players maybe were not up for the fight. However, that changed when a hefty tackle from JC caused concern, and it became a very competitive match indeed, with one Woods booking against two for the home side.

The Woods’ defence was well marshalled by Rich Vercesi and, supported by the two midfielders JC & JD, looked untroubled, whilst Mark Britt in goal was restricted to goal kicks only. Paul Element was holding the ball up nicely and Northwood were causing great concern to the Bedfont defence.

Half-time came, and Tyrone Durrant replaced James Crockford, who had a hamstring problem. Tyrone fitted in comfortably alongside Vercesi, with Max Moore going to right-back. Terry Hall was solid down the left and looking good for the Vets’ cup final next week.

Scott Purdue and Paul Rush replaced Max Duffy and Paul Element respectively, but not before Element had played Peter Creczi in one-on-one with the keeper, and Peter should have done better with his finish. That would have wrapped the game up, but instead Woods had to be vigilant until the end.

A good cross from Max Moore saw Tyrone with a chance but a mistimed jump failed to trouble the keeper. The result was about right, and lets hope Bedfont acquit themselves well in the League Final – a competition that Woods have won before.

Northwood now have three games left, all next week. On Tuesday Woods are at home to AFC Hayes, followed by a trip to Newport Pagnell on Thursday, and finally at home to Cove on Saturday 25th April. Nine points would frighten the two teams above the Woods…
